Fiberglass vs. Concrete Pools: A Practical Comparison

When homeowners in South Florida begin researching pool options, the choice typically comes down to two materials: fiberglass and concrete. Both can create a functional, attractive pool. But the differences in installation, maintenance, and long-term costs are significant.

Installation Timeline

A fiberglass pool is manufactured in a controlled factory environment and delivered to your property as a single, finished shell. Once on-site, the shell is typically set in a single day. The entire project, from excavation to swimming, usually takes 3 to 6 weeks.

Concrete pools are built on-site from scratch. The process involves forming rebar structures, applying shotcrete or gunite, curing (which takes weeks), applying a surface finish, and filling. A concrete pool typically requires 3 to 6 months to complete.

Surface and Maintenance

The gelcoat surface of a fiberglass pool is non-porous and smooth. This means algae has a difficult time attaching to the walls, which translates to less chemical use and less time spent brushing. The surface does not need to be refinished or replastered.

Concrete pool surfaces are porous by nature. Plaster, pebble, and quartz finishes require periodic acid washing and eventual resurfacing, typically every 10 to 15 years at a cost of $8,000 to $15,000 or more.

Long-Term Costs

While the initial cost of a fiberglass pool may be comparable to or slightly less than a concrete pool, the long-term savings are substantial. Lower chemical costs, reduced energy usage from better insulation, no resurfacing requirements, and fewer repairs result in significantly lower total ownership costs over a 20-year period.

The Right Choice

For most South Florida homeowners, fiberglass offers a compelling combination of faster installation, lower maintenance, and better long-term value. The pre-engineered manufacturing process also means consistent quality and structural integrity backed by manufacturer warranties.
